Almost all of the inhabitants of Amber Hollow just died in a mysterious fire, and the survivors’ stories don’t match up. Still, the truth is even stranger than their lies. As Sadie and Jeremy unravel the secrets of the isolated town, they experience supernatural events that they can’t explain.

Bookshelves is not for downloading or buying books directly. Bookshelves is a free tool to track books you have read and want to read. You can also use it to discover new books to read and learn more about books. In one way, Bookshelves is the OnlineBookClub.org version of Goodreads, except with Bookshelves you are able to get a much more personalized experience. Amber Hollow is a tribute to Wisconsin as both a state as well as a launching pad for some of the world’s most notorious serial killers (eat your heart out John Wayne Gacy!). The novel is full of “Wisconsinisms” as well as being a period piece with respect to the year it takes place in, 1991.

“Amber Hollow” is centered around two detectives investigating a seemingly impossible case, so for what I wanted, the format appeared to be the best choice. It was intended to be a horror novel, but it reads like a mystery. Hopefully, the combination of genres resulted in a truly special piece of fiction. Only the villagers know the secret of Amber Hollow, a place where sanity is checked at the town line and the parameters of reality become blurred.

Psychologically, horror stories can take you through a fiendishly nightmarish landscape, so by proxy, your own problems seem insignificant in comparison. And fear is a very motivating feeling, so it’s best to embrace it by confronting your demons. By delving into this darkness, one inevitably becomes stronger in the process. These ratings mean that the book was just horrible and we could not finish it at all.
